“Robin” de Dave Itzkoff conta a biografia de meu ator favorito, Robin Williams. Acredito que tenha levado mais de 1 ano para ler esse livro, e admito, praticamente pulei boa parte entre os anos de 1995-2005 para conseguir terminar. É um livro grande, e hoje em dia somente disponível em inglês.
Mas foi muito bom conhecer um pouco mais de Robin: como foi sua educação familiar, seus primeiros anos, seus altos e baixos… Esse livro me levou a visitar Juilliard quando em NY recentemente e comentar como fã que sou: “Robin Williams já subiu essas escadas! Robin Williams teve aula aqui!”.

But for Robin , he was hearing the voices in his head and putting them into the minds of these soldiers on this really large battlefield board . I thought , ‘ This guy is really interesting . ’ ”
When Dunn at last got home at two a.m . , he woke up his wife to tell her , “ I saw a young man do something tonight that I have never seen before . And this kid is going to go somewhere . ”
The Juilliard faculty began to question whether Robin was equipped for its advanced program . “ He didn’t have a basic foundation of how to approach acting , ” Kahn said in reflection . “ It was coming from a kind of manic intuition , and it was , finally , an act of imitation rather than an act of creation . ”
Robin could think faster than anybody I ever saw . ”
“ He had gotten used to getting a laugh and one night he didn’t , ” she said . “ So then he did a Tarzan thing with his voice , and he got the laugh . I told him after , ‘ You got the laugh , but you broke the show rule . ’ ”
His routines seemed entirely off – the – cuff and different each time you saw him , but as those who worked closely with Robin knew , his true gift was not necessarily in being purely spontaneous but in creating the appearance of spontaneity .
“ In the beginning , you’re imitating everybody you’ve ever seen . … But all of a sudden , you get to a point where you go , ‘ Ah , I can be me . I can develop my own stuff . ’ And you do . ”
Leno said , is an unusual discipline where “ the affirmation of strangers is more important than that of friends or family members . No comic wants his friends or his family in the audience . They’re either going to laugh too hard or they’re not going to laugh at all . You want complete strangers . They’re the only ones that count . ”
You have a drug problem ? ’ ‘ No problem . Everybody’s got it . ’ Everyone will pump you up if you’re ready , because it also gives them some control over you . You’ll tolerate conversations with people you wouldn’t even talk to in daylight . ”

“ Of course the place goes crazy , ” Shydner said . “ He just destroyed for like forty minutes . Everything he did got a laugh . ”
Robin spent a week at the couple’s house , sometimes doing nothing more than sitting at the window and looking longingly at children playing hockey in the street .
As Short would later observe , “ He reminded me of Saint – Exupéry’s Little Prince : wistfully surveying a world to which he felt he didn’t quite belong . ”
Whatever blithe expression crossed his face and whatever character he imagined himself to be playing , he always carried in his wallet a meaningful Ralph Waldo Emerson quotation : “ Humor is the mistress of sorrow . ”

Keating stirs the boys ’ souls with an apt citation from Whitman’s Leaves of Grass : Oh me ! Oh life ! of the questions of these recurring , Of the endless trains of the faithless , of cities fill’d with the foolish … What good amid these , O me , O life ? Answer . That you are here — that life exists and identity , That the powerful play goes on , and you may contribute a verse .
“ He said it’s easy for the boys , at the end , to stand up for someone who’s dying . But if he’s not dying , then they’re standing up for what he taught them , and that’s much more powerful .
Filming was set for the late fall in Delaware , principally around the campus of St . Andrew’s School in Wilmington , which would stand in for the fictional Welton Academy .
“ He was like , ‘ We have a lot in common , ’ ” Hansen said . “ I was like , ‘ There’s no way we have anything in common ’ — I didn’t say that , but that’s what I’m thinking . I was serving hot meals yesterday . And he was like , ‘ You studied with Sandy Meisner , I studied with John Houseman at Juilliard . We both come from the same background . ’ He did that with each boy . He had that one thing to make you identify with him . It was so smart to go , ‘ You can trust me . We can play . ’ ”
For an afternoon , the classroom and its students were turned over to Robin while two cameras rolled . Weir encouraged him to riff on the sorts of authors Keating would be teaching — Shakespeare , Dickens — knowing that Robin did not have any time to prepare material , but that this likely would not be a problem for him . “ He’s a kind of writer , without a pen , ” Weir said of Robin . “ He just writes in the air . ”
His presence alone was often enough to inspire his young costars to take chances and improvise in their own performances ; if he could do it , why not them ?
“ Mr . Dalton — you be joining us ? ” In that moment , Hansen said he decided , “ I’m going to challenge him — see how well he’s paying attention . And I was like , ‘ Exercising the right not to walk . ’ It was an improvised line , which I didn’t do much of . ”
“ It was very liberating for the rest of the shoot , ” Hansen said . “ As long as I was behaving truthfully , working off something that existed in the moment between us , there was a little leeway there to catch fire . And that was Robin — Robin going , ‘ Let’s play . Bring me what you have . ’ He wanted everything , and he could handle anything . The guy was a lion . He lay down with all these young actors and just let you play all over him . ”
“ I expected him to be completely manic and all over the place and funny , a little edgy , ” Weltman said , “ and he wasn’t that way at all on our film . He was very quiet and self – effacing and generous . I remember there was one time he said to me , ‘ I’m just here to introduce the world to these boys . ’ ”
So Reeve and Schulman went without him to find a theater , where they were let into a screening of Dead Poets Society and they waited at the back . “ It was the last scene of the movie , ” Schulman recalled , “ and after the boys stood on their chairs , when the music started , the audience got up and applauded , gave it a standing ovation . And I went , ‘ Whoa . I’ve never seen this before . ’ Chris turned to me and was crying . He said , ‘ I’m so happy for Robin . ’ It was so sweet . So I had some sense that something interesting was happening . And certainly , as a writer , that was a thrill . ”
Viewers felt compelled to reflect on their lives and wonder who had been their Mr . Keating — that person who had provided crucial instruction or encouragement at an impressionable age , helping to make them the person that they became — or to await the arrival of such a figure at some future time .
“ Family is what you make of it , ” Zak said years later . “ For us , it’s the people who you love and trust and are around you .
Robin had learned many memorable verses from Laurie over the years , and her obituary in the San Francisco Chronicle contained a poem said to be one that he’d written for her . It was how Robin had been taught to live since childhood : nothing is permanent , transition is constant . Anywhere can be home and anyone can be family , and you can always start over again in new places , with new people .
“ Robin was a genius , and genius doesn’t produce normal men next door who are good family men and look after their wives and children . Genius requires its own way of looking at and living in the world , and it isn’t always compatible with conventional ways of living . ”
Over dinner afterward , Crystal said , “ He seemed quiet . On occasion , he’d just reach out and hold my shoulder and look at me like he wanted to say something . ” When the friends said good – bye at the end of the night , Robin burst out with unexpected affection . “ He hugged me good – bye , and Janice , and he started crying , ” Crystal said . “ I said , ‘ What’s the matter ? ’ He said , ‘ Oh , I’m just so happy to see you . It’s been too long . You know I love you . ’ ”
“ I said , ‘ Robin , why don’t you go and do stand – up ? ’ ” she recalled . Robin broke down in tears . “ He just cried and said , ‘ I can’t , Cheri . ’ I said , ‘ What do you mean , you can’t ? ’ He said , ‘ I don’t know how anymore . I don’t know how to be funny . ’ And it was just gut wrenching to hear him admit that , rather than lie to me and say something else . I think that’s how troubled he was about all of it . ”
